2004 Ira Butler Trophy and Bill Murdoch Trophy

This issue contains the announcement of those orchids to receive these trophies for the year 2004

  • Ira Butler Trophy was awarded to Sarcochilus Heidi 'Albert Brown' grown by Down Under Native Orchids;

  • Bill Murdoch Trophy was awarded to Dockrillia cucumerina 'Margaret' AM-ACC/AOC-NSW, grown by Fred Fear. 

Each orchid nominated for both trophies has been listed.

Cattleya percivaliana (Rchb.f.) O'Brien

Colin Jennings has delved back in history to remind us of the stunning beauty of this superb species and an AOC Award received by Jim McCubbin of Brisbane - Cattleya percivaliana 'The Summit' ACC/AOC.  The plant had 13 inflorescences and carried 25 blooms.

An Orchid by any Other Name Would Smell as Sweet (Part 1)

Gary Yong Gee has updated a presentation he delivered at the 16th Australian Orchid Conference in Adelaide in September 2003, and looks at the increasing use of DNA technology to make changes to the classification of orchid genera and species.  Lavishly illustrated with 21 of Gary's superb photographs.  (To be continued)

Recent Vandaceous Awards

In response to a Letter to the Editor, Colin Jennings has provided a look at some of the recently awarded vandaceous orchids, including an Award of Distinction.

Dipodium punctatum (Smith) R.Br.

Colin Jennings had a surprise in store when out driving in the Mount Lofty Ranges on New Years Day, finding some of this orchid, also known as Dipodium roseum or the Christmas Orchid or Hyacinth Orchid.  Illustrated are the white form he found and the better known pink form.

Orchids Mysterious and Exotic

Peter Shelton looks at some of the exotic history surrounding the early days of orchid collecting.

Oncidium onustum Lindl.

Colin Jennings  provides some history and cultural hints on growing this wonderful species.  The illustration from the AOC archives is of the 1993 award Oncidium onustum 'Mem. James' AM-ACC/AOC-QOS, and owned by Mrs N. Nolan.

Rare Orchid Unearthed by Longerenong Students

From the University of Melbourne comes this report of the Longerenong Campus students find of four new plants of Caladenia xanthochila in a small Victorian valley near Mutoa.  The species depends on one particular fungus for a food source. The students used Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment to document the exact location. The terrestrial orchid is an endangered species.

Age is no Barrier

From Western Australia, Jean Herbert writes of the magnificent flowering of a plant of Dendrochilum uncatum 'Danne' HCC/AOC, grown by Mick O'Brien of the tender age of 89.

AOC Conservation Officer, Alan Stephenson, writes of the theft of one of only two plants of Cypripedium calceolus in the UK and the demise of other species.
