THIS
MONTH'S FEATURES:
FRONT
COVER:
Pot.
Dal's Success 'Michelle' HCC/AOC (QLD) adorns our cover this month. This
beautiful orchid just implores viewers to "look at me". The proud
owner is Bruce Denley of Queensland, and the photographer was Gary Yong Gee.
From
the President, Publications Director and Editor.
Editor,
Coralie Hills, provides a summary of the treats inside this issue, and the
AOC President, Jim Smith provides a summary of the changes proposed by the
review of the AOC Constitution and By-Laws. Publications Director, Colin
Jennings provides a summary of some problems with both delivery of Orchids
Australia to domestic customers by Australia Post, and some other matters of
concern.
Species
Paphiopedilums
This
month Gary Hart has provided and interesting look back on the species
Paphiopedilums, or Old World Orchids. He looks at the range of these 70 odd
species and some of the conditions they require to emulate their habitat and
grow them successfully in captivity. The article is accompanied by four
photographs, courtest of TAPS (The Australian Paphiopedilum Society).
Walking
the Wimmera
In
this issue John Richards walks the Wimmera region of Victoria again to point out
the terrestrial orchid treasures of the region flowering in May/June.
Reports on his regular treks into the region will continue in coming issues.
John is also an excellent photographer and has provided six photos to illustrate
his article this month.
Selected
Species - Paphiopedilum sukhakulii
Feature
writer and species specialist, Peter Taylor, this month has chosen as his
subject, Paphiopedilum sukhakulii. As usual Peter has researched the
history and the habitat of the species, and provides his advice for successful
culture by orchid hobbyists.
Second
International Orchid Conservation Conference
Regular
correspondent, Marilyn Light of Quebec, Canada, has written on her attendance at
this conference held earlier in the year at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens,
Saratosa, Florida USA. Marilyn writes that there were a number of Australians
present. Details of the lectures given are provided as well as ten
photographs to illustrate the topics.
Orchids
and the Chelsea Flower Show
Richard
and Heather Fishlock had the good fortune to attend this years' Chelsea Flower
show and, of course, were very interested in the orchids on display.
Richard has provided us with a report of what is one of THE flower shows in the
world, as well as six photographs to illustrate the report.
The
Genus Vanilla planifolia
Rex
Johnston, Tasmania, has a look at the genus which has provided us with that
flavouring of the same name for centuries, and about which we here receive so
many requests for information of how to 'grow your own'. Rex has done some
further research and turned up some growing hints. Vanilla planifolia
is but one of around sixty species of the genus, but one of the few cultivated
commercially.
Orchids
of the Year 2003
AOC
Registrar General of Judging, Colin Jennings, has provided details of all those
orchids nominated by the various Regions/States for the annual Orchid Hybrid of
the Year, Orchid Species of the Year and Award of Distinction of the Year, from
those orchid awarded in the calendar year 2003. The Judging Panels across
the country have considered their verdict and the results will be presented to
the AOC Annual General Meeting in Melbourne on 9th October. Make you
selection and see how your choices compare with the AOC Judges. The
official results will be published in our December issue. Twenty large
photographs accompany the article.
