JUNE 2004 (Vol. 16 No.3)
THIS
MONTH'S FEATURES:
FRONT
COVER:
Thelymitra
variegata on our cover this month pays tribute to the life and work of Ron
Heberle of Western Australia, who passed away in February at the age of
90. We have featured just some of Ron's superb photographs in past issues
of Orchids Australia, and this issue we feature an array of some more of the
bizzare and highly colourful terrestrial orchids to which Ron devoted his
lifetime's work. Graham Bowden and Tony Watkinson have provided an
Obituary for us. (Note: Tony has created galleries of hundreds of
Ron's photographs on the internet for us all to enjoy, and a link to the site
can be found on our ConneXions page).
From
the President and Editor.
Editor, Coralie Hills, provides
a summary of the treats inside this issue, and the
AOC President, Jim Smith provides some food for thought for us all on the AOC
Judging system and the voluntary work provided by our accredited judges.
Forty
Years On
Registrar
General of Judging, Colin Jennings, delves back through the archives to provide
a retrospective of AOC Awards 40 years ago, including the first award ever
granted - Cym. Wallara 'Wondabah' AM/AOC-NSW - and the (then) written
request for granting of the award dated 21st August 1964. The grower was
Wondabah Orchids Pty. Ltd. Colin also provides a look at some of the other
awards granted in 1964.
Walking
the Wimmera
In
this issue we welcome a new series by the Wimmera Wanderer, John Richards of
Horsham. John will be providing a regular look of what he has found
growing and flowering in the wilds of the western Victoria area known of the
Wimmera. This includes areas such as the Grampians National Park, Black
Range State Park, Wyperfeld National Park. These are the areas covered in
his first article illustrated with some of his great photographs of three
Genoplesium species, and some habitat shots.
Lycastes
Regular
contributor, Gary Hart, provides some background to this flamboyant species from
the Americas, and how he grows them in the southern Sydney suburb of Caringbah.
There are six stunning photographs underpinning his love for this genus.
Vale
- Rebecca Tyson Northen
Lee
Cooke, Executive Director of the American Orchid Society, sadly writes to inform
us of the passing of one of America's most popular and recognizable orchid
personalities on 30th April.
Wallacia
- The Last Time
Graham
Larkin, President of the Hawkesbury District Orchids, recalls the disasterous
bush first of Christmas 2001 and the tragic loss of the Metcalf's property at
Wallacia. Jean and her late husband 'Doc' will be remembered for the great
hybrid Cattleya Sylvia Fry 'Wallacia' which was awarded an FCC/AOC-OSNSW,
and subsequently AOC Orchid of the Year in 1972. Most of the orchids left
at Wallacia were cooked, but fortunately many of the original breeding plants
had been relocated to a son in Queensland some years before. Graham
remembers his past encounters with the Metcalf's.
Some
Philippine Orchids Whose Names Start with "D"
Our
Canadian friend and regular contributor of articles, Marilyn Light of Ottawa,
discusses some of the fascinating species from the Philippines - Dendrochilum
and Dendrobium. As well as brief descriptions of these species,
Marilyn describes her experiences in growing some of them. The article is
well illustrated with thirteen photographs including detailed close-ups of some
very small Dendrochilums.
Colmanara
Wildcat - a Tamed Beauty
A
new contributor, Ron Yates of South Australia, writes of experiences with this
hybrid which crosses over the normal boundaries of warm and cold growing genera
of the Oncidinea group. Colmanara Wildcat has provided some spectacular
and highly colourful clones to satisfy those who in warmer climes desire the
cooler growing members of the group. Beautiful photographs of Colmanara
Wildcat clones of 'Carmela' and 'Bloodshot' illustrate the article, courtesy of
the Photo library of the Orchid Club of South Australia.
Pesticides
Colin
Jennings provides a timely article on pesticides, their use and the safety
precautions that should - no, MUST - be taken when using them. In today's
world of environmental awareness, this is essential reading for all those who
use pesticides.
Australasian
Native Orchid Society (Vic) Embraces the 21st Century
Helene
Wild relates the activities of ANOS (Vic) today and how they are coping with the
move into the 21st century. Four photographs provided including a couple
of very odd looking orchids - Dendrobium tapiniense, Corysanthes hispida,
and a very beautiful clone of Dendrobium speciosum var. speciosum
'National White'.
