President's Message

Outgoing President of the Australian Orchid Council presents his final 'A Word from the President' in this edition.  Murray Aldridge shares some thoughts of his term as President and for the future.

Vale - Stuart Heyden, August 15, 2003

We present three items on and by prominent orchid grower, hybridizer, friend, family man and good bloke.  A member and long time supporter of the Queensland Orchid Society achieved much in his life, both in Australia and at the International level.

First is a tribute by good mate Jim McCubbin based on the Eulogy delivered at the service.  The second is a glimpse at some of Stuart's orchids and their AOC Awards, including an FCC (contributed by the AOC Registrar General of Judging, Colin Jennings) and finally, we reproduce an article written by Stuart for the QOS Newsletter on his experiences with 'Time for a Change' and building a new bush house.  Almost prophetically he concluded the article with the words "My next change? If St. Peter suggests that with my experience I look after a vast amount of orchids in the sky, I will just have to say: "Look Pete, I am sick of potting bloody orchids. Find me a perch with the seagulls, point my fishing rod to Cuba and my mind will go back into neutral and only then will I know I am back in heaven".

Cultural Awards selection 2002

As we wait for the selection of the AOC Orchids of the Year (nominations shown in our August edition) Colin Jennings presents an overview of the Cultural Awards from the year 2002, and quite a variety there is too.  Eight Award photos are included.

Yellow Phalaenopsis Breeding - an Overview (Part 1)

Howard S. Ginsberg lives in Montreal but travels extensively both as a speaker and as an AOS Judge. Here he delves into the world of breeding yellow phalaenopsis, and the complexities that evaded hybridisers for so long.  One day there will be yellows as good as the whites and pinks. There are 8 excellent photographs with the article, and the promise of more to follow in our December issue.

Orchid roots and mycorrhizae

Also from Montreal is Marilyn H.S. Light who has had a long and distinguished career in orchid research.  Here Marilyn has provided a question and answer style article to explain the relationships of various orchids and mycorrhizae.  Marilyn has adapted the article from a presentation she made to members of the internet orchid society, OrchidSafari.  (www.orchidsafari.org). Some excellent examples of micro-photography of roots and the mycorrhiza.

Exploring beautiful and mysterious northern Laos

We travel to another part of the globe with Rod Rice to take in some of the experiences of life and orchids in a little known part of SE Asia.  Five of Rod's fine photographs illustrate the article.

Dendrobium cuthbertsonii F. von Mueller

Colin Jennings provides a look at some of the unusual colours and fascinating flowers of this orchid, hailing mainly from the Bismark Archipelago in Papua New Guinea.  The flowers are only 3 to 4cm in diameter but deliver impact in their massed display.

A Grower's insight gave the world a spectacular flower.

Gary Hart of Caringbah, looks at some of the superb hybrids that have eventuated from the cattleya alliance of orchids since William Cattley first saw them flower in 1824 - mearly 180 years ago.  The plants had been used as packing material!!!  Seven excellent photographs illustrate this story.

CD Review - Orchid Potting Made (Very) Easy

Colin Hamilton has reviewed a new style of educational CD especially for orchid growers.  From Greg Allikas, Florida, come this exciting and lavishly illustrated "How to..." electronic publication. Colin gives it a big thumbs up.  A steal at US$25 shipped worldwide. (www.orchidworks.com/potting)
