European
Orchid Conference 2003
One
of the most famous of orchid conferences held in Europe will be staged in London
from March 13 - 16 at the Royal Horticultural Society Halls in London. We
publish details of this event being hosted by the RHS and the British Orchid
Council, including a list of speakers.

Sarcochilus hybrids
AOC
Registrar General of Judging, Colin Jennings, has chosen to write about this
popular Australian native orchid and its hybrids in this edition. The
article is illustrated with eleven award photographs including some unusual
colours and markings.
Cymbidiums
- the Lip
West
Australian nurseryman Kevin Butler has delved into the unusual world of lip
markings of selected white Cymbidiums. This is illustrated with eight
photographs of his white Cyms. showing lip colour ranging from almost nil to
almost full dark red.
Declining
Cymbidium Awards
The
once very popular Cymbidium has been displaced by other genera in the list of
Australian Orchid Council awards in recent years. Stephen Hauser, and
Associate Judge in Victoria, has been looking into the apparent sudden decline
in Awards for this genus.
Dendrobiums
Grown 'Cool' in unheated shadehouse
Dave
and Ros Mapley have found the ideal position in their orchid house to hang their
plant of Den. Anne's Rainbow Surprise 'Gizmo', in their shadehouse in
Ulverstone, on the northwest coast of Tasmania. Dave and Ros tell their
story to Rex Johnson who also took the photos.

General of Judging - but what does he do?

Flowering for Melbourne's 'smelly' orchid
The
Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne recently had an exciting event - it's first
flowering of Bulbophyllum fletcherianum back in July. It created
high excitement - that is until they discovered its diabolical smell !!
