Meet
Murray Aldridge, the new President of the AOC

Australian Orchid Council has a new President as of the October 2000
Annual General Meeting. We present a brief profile on the man who
now leads our national Council, and some of the orchids he and wife Lyn
grow. By profession Murray is Senior Council (formerly Queen's

Vale
- Gunnar Seidenfaden
It
is with deep regret we report the passing of one of the great orchid
personalities of the 21st century, Gunnar Seidenfaden, just 2 weeks before
his 93rd birthday. He was a noted authority on the orchids of SE
Asia, and Thailand in particular. His keen interest was sparked when
posted to Thailand as Danish Ambassador in 1955. Prior to this he
had been an Arctic explorer. There are two articles, one by Rod Rice
and the other by Finn Rasmussen of Copenhagen.

Details
of the Schedule of Events for next year's World Orchid Conference to be
held in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia are presented in full, as well as

manage its official tour to this triennial event, one of the largest
orchid events in the world. Details from Easy
Orchids web site [WOC]. Note: Early bird registration for
the Conference has been extended to 31 July, 2001. Check the WOC2002

More
AOC Awards from the Burnie Conference 2000
Registrar
General of Judging, Colin Jennings, presents the final five orchids
awarded at the AOC Conference in October. There was a total of 13
awards made at the Conference, possibly a record for an AOC
Conference. Those Taswegians sure know how to grow some fine
orchids.
Phragmipedium
besseae's colour heritage through AOC Awards
Colin
Jennings, AOC Registrar General of Judging, looks at the legacy of colour
from the hybrids of this brilliantly coloured Phrag. Seven photos of
Phrag. besseae and its hybrids are shown. Not bad for a species with it's
first hybrid registered only ten years ago.
Blue
Sarcochilus flowers
W.
Morris delves into the puzzle of blue colouring of Sarcochilus hybrids and
questions some of the theories of a prior article published in 1995.
Growing
Promenaeas
Alan
and Ada Kelly from Tasmania grow Promenaeas, the almost miniature
relatives of the Zygopetalinae. Rex Johnson visited the Kelly's and
provides an interesting article and some magnificent photographs as well.
Selecting
show classes for Dendrobium speciosum
Jacinta
Burke and Peter Adams' article provides a 'map' of the spread of the
varieties of Dendrobium speciosum down the east coast of Australia, and
come up with suggestions for splitting this species up for show bench
judging.
Singing
the Praises of Paph. kolopakingii primary hybrids
Jerry
Lawless writes about this relatively new species (only discovered in 1981)
and some of its hybrids. Four photographs accompany the article.
A
Checklist of the genus Gongora in Colombia
Rod
Rice describes the interesting and unusual species of Gongora found in
Colombia, illustrated with six photos.
Book
Review: Orchids in Your Garden - Bob Friend
Dennis
Simmons reviews this new book from former nurseryman, Bob Friend.
The book offers plenty of suggestions for orchids to grow outside in the
garden and the type of conditions to suit. Many people forget that
there are plenty of orchids that can be used in landscaping.
Plus…
- All the regular features of Computer Corner, what's winning at
Shows around the country, Cultural Notes for various parts of Australia,
and our list of upcoming International orchid events through to 2005.
There is also a surprise for some lucky Australian subscriber - Orchids
Australia free for one year, provided it is claimed in 14 days.
