Incoming President, Murray Aldridge SC, gives a personal view of the AOC Conference, and some views on the activities of the Australian Orchid Council Inc.

AOC Orchids of the Year 1999

Australian Orchid Council ratified the selection of the three Orchids of the Year from those awarded in 1999. This was the result of voting from all AOC judging panels around the country. Some notes have been provided by the owners of these outstanding orchids. The winners were:

AOC Orchid Hybrid of the Year – Den. Yondi Tina ‘Goliath’ FCC/AOC, owned by Bernie Fletcher, New South Wales.

AOC Orchid Species of the Year – Rhynchostylis retusa ‘Karen Maree’ AM/AOC, owned by Keven Young, Northern Territory.

AOC Award of Distinction of the Year – Sarcochilus Jeanne ‘Little Gem’ HCC-AD/AOC, owned by Neville Roper, New South Wales.

AOC Honour for Colin Hamilton

The Board of Management meeting held in October endorsed a recommendation from the Board of Referees to grant an Honorary Fellowship to Colin Hamilton, former Editor/Publications Director of Orchids Australia for five years, and creator of this highly successful web site. The citation referred to a "strong personal commitment to furthering the Council’s objectives".

Two new records of Bulbophyllinae found in the Philippines

Enthusiast of the orchids, people and country of the Philippines, Jim Cootes, provides information on finding two Bulbophyllums, previously not recorded in the Philippines, on the coast of Luzon. Excellent colour photographs accompany the article.

Renanthera – the Scarlet Ladies of Vandaceous Orchids

Rod Rice takes a look at this colourful genus with mainly red flowers, and their discovery. Rod also provides six excellent photographs of plants from his own collection to illustrate the text.

Growing Orchids in the Garden

Robert Friend, former orchid nurseryman in northern NSW, provides an interesting look at using orchids in the garden in marginal areas. It is an extract from his newly published book titled ‘Orchids in the Garden’. Five illustrative photographs.

Extremes in Growing Requirements – Soph. Acuensis and Soph. cernua

Tasmanian orchid identity, Chris Nicholas, looks at these two blood red species from Brazil and their differing culture requirements through a study of their natural environment. Two great photos.

My Strange and stunning Stanhopeas

Amme Gardiner of Victoria, provides an interesting insight into this strange but stunning genus. Photo of Stanhopea wardii ‘Jill’ HCC/AOC accompanies the story.

Japan Grand Prix 2000

Kevin Butler, nurseryman from Western Australia, provides a detailed account and photographic essay on this year’s Japan Grand Prix 2000. As usual there are some stunning displays, a feature of this annual event. Twelve excellent photographs are provided, which also display Kevin’s skills with the camera.
