Volume 12 No.3 - JUNE 2000

CONTENTS

THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:

FRONT COVER: Grastidium strictanthum - introduces Phil Spence's article on the Grastidiums of Papua New Guinea. There are eight great photographs of different species from the camera of Rocky Roe.

Selected Species - Stanhopea martiana - Peter Taylor's regular page on species brings us this very striking orchid, with a superb photograph from the collection of David Banks. The flower is almost clown-like in appearance. As usual Peter delves into the history of the species as well as its cultivation.

15th Australian Orchid Conference, Burnie, October 2000 - We cover some updates on the Conference and a timely reminder that the cut-off date for registrations is getting close. There is also a run down on the list of speakers and some of the scenic attractions to beckon visitors to Burnie.

Oncidiinae Hybrids (Part 1) - AOC Registrar General of Judging, Colin Jennings, gives a report on the Oncidium alliance awards over the last few years. Part 1 deals with the uni-genus, while Part 2 will look at the intergeneric hybrids. Nine superb photographs from the AOC Award files.

Cairns Orchid Display Weathers Disasters - Dennis Simmons looks at how the orchids in the Cairns area and the Flecker Botanic Gardens weathered the extraordinary onslaught of drenching rains and violent winds of Cyclone Steve earlier this year. Photographs by Peter Shanahan includes a massive plant of Dendrobium teretifolium, which grows on the Cairns Esplanade, in full bloom having survived the 140km/hour winds.

Jewels of the Brazilian Forests - Promenaea - John T. Woolf provides an interesting article on these beautiful but not often seen orchids from Brazil. John has been delving into these and hybridising them.

Book Review - Proceedings 6th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference - Colin Hamilton reviews this publication by the Townsville Orchid Society, hosts of the Conference held in Townsville in October 1998.

Plus… All the regular features of what's winning at Shows around the country, Cultural Notes for various parts of Australia, and our list of upcoming International orchid events through to 2005. There is also a surprise for some lucky Australian subscriber – Orchids Australia free for one year, provided it is claimed in 14 days.
