THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:

FRONT COVER: Dendrobium Avril's Gold 'Florafest' AD/AOC. - This highly colourful Dendrobium was selected by Judges of the Australian Orchid Council Inc. as the AOC Award of Distinction of the Year 1998. The judging was carried out by all judging panels across the country. Congratulations to Florafest Orchids of Toowoomba, Queensland.

VALE - J. Milton Warne - Internationally known orchid personality, Milton Warne, died in Honolulu just before we went to press late November.

The Cymbidium Page - Lip Colour Terminology. Julian Coker explains the difference between albino, albino carrier, concolour and normal coloured lips. Four photographs underline the written word and show Dr. Coker's excellent photographic skills.

Reports from the AOC Annual General Meeting, Board of Management Meeting and new Conservation thrust. AOC President John Harris, gives a report on these meetings held in Adelaide on 16th October 1999 and the outcomes, including changes in the Executive and Committee.

Growing Slipper Orchids in a Socialist-Marxist Country - by Jerry Lawliss. This is an amusing account of bureaucracy gone wrong, and written very much tongue-in-cheek.

Selected Species - Dendrobium aphrodite. Peter Taylor's regular feature is, as usual, an excellent read. Peter researches his subject thoroughly. We have the history of the orchid itself right through to how to grow it.

Australian Orchid Foundation honours Len Lawler. Dr. Len Lawler has received the 1999 Award of Honour from the Australian Orchid Foundation for his lifetime work with orchid research and the collection of new species which were made available to scientists and herbariums.

Book/CD rom Reviews. Peter Taylor reviews "Orchids of Papua New Guinea" by (the late) Andree Millar. Unfortunately the book was not completed at the time of Andree's death at the end of 1995 and the book has had a difficult journey to final production. Stephen Kemp reviews the Orchidopaedia CD Vol.1 (Orkology Kreations) by Greg Steenbeeke and Gary Yong Gee. This is the first disc in a planned five part series.

Josef Warszewicz and his Orchids. Brian Milligan has provided another historical insight into one of the greats of the heady days of orchid exploration and collection. Cattleya warscewiczii as illustrated in 'Reichenbachia' has been reproduced from Brian's photography while two other orchids named in honour of Josef Warszewicz are shown, with photography by Brian and David Banks.

Why Save Orchids Under Threat? Jim Heath in Perth ponders the reasons and explains what one business is doing about it. There are six terrestrial orchids considered "endangered" in WA illustrated with the photographs provided by the researchers at Kings Park and Botanical Gardens, Perth.

Grammatophyllum stapeliaeflorum. Phil Spence details a new recording to the distribution of this intriguing and magnificent species which has now been found in Papua New Guinea. The recording was made by the National Capital Botanical Gardens in Port Moresby. Phil also shows us an unusual coloured clone of Grammatophyllum scriptum from Irian Jaya (the western half of the island of New Guinea).

The World of Species Orchids. David Banks has provided this article based on his paper delivered at the 14th Australian Orchid Conference in Brisbane. There are 23 superb photographs by David Titmuss of plants grown by David Banks. These include some rare and unusual species with some only recently named. As to be expected David Bank's text is most informative.

Terrestrial Orchids of Tasmania's NW Coast in Spring. Barry Dudman provides some insight into what visitors to Burnie, Tasmania, for the 15th Australian Orchid Council Conference next October might expect to see on field trips. Photos by Mrs. Jeanette Johnson.

Other Things: There are details of the coming shows around Australia, workshops, new products, our usual departments such as Cultural Notes, Computer Corner and more.
