Volume 11 No.4 - AUGUST 1999
CONTENTS
FRONT COVER: Dendrobium chrysanthum Wallich. - This magnificent pendulous golden yellow orchid is by way of an introduction to a historical feature "The Duke of Devonshire and his Orchids" compiled by Brian Milligan and David Banks. The story concerns one of the largest orchid collections ever assembled and the Duke's chief horticulturalist, William Paxton.
VALE - Don Herman - Internationally known orchid personality, Donald E. Herman, has died suddenly. We carry a tribute to this great man and a photograph with some Australian friends only taken at the World Orchid Conference, Vancouver, in April.
Paphiopedilum ooii. We are proud to present the first ever colour photographs of this new Paph. species from Borneo. Described by Harold Koopowitz and named after prominent Malaysian orchid identity Michael Ooi. Interesting photograph shows the front, side and back view, while another shows an atypical flower with a yellow base colour.
The Cymbidium Page - Cym. Golden Elf. Julian Coker provides an insight into this brilliantly coloured mini cymbidium including a photo of a specimen plant which received a Cultural Commendation, and some progeny.
Just Browsing. Colin Jennings, AOC Registrar General, gives us another historical insight, prompted by his recent visit to the U.K.
Selected Species - Dendrobium laevifolium. Peter Taylor's regular feature is always a wealth of information, and this month is no exception. Peter delves into the history of his subject and it makes for fascinating reading. There is also tips on growing this unusual orchid, which, as Peter says, adds colour to his orchid house in the cold of winter and whisks him away into a fantasy of the warm tropics. As usual the accompanying photograph is excellent.
Native Orchids of the Carnarvon National Park. Ralph Crane undertook a survey of the Carnarvon National Park - a fairly extensive region with its northern most extremity just west of Rockhampton, and stretching down towards Roma, Queensland. The article is a summary of his findings and is illustrated with superb photographs by Ralph, Gary Yong Gee and Wayne Harris. I never realised how orchid rich this area is, even though I live only about 200km away! (Editor).
The Art of Creating a Display. Terry Dean gives us an insight into the considerations to be given in making a display for exhibition or a competitive show. What do the judges look for? Terry has the answers and just in time for the 1999 Spring Show season.
Micropera utriculosa. This unusual orchid is the subject of another short article by Jim Cootes.
Big Brother is Watching. We have had a couple of instances of stand-over tactics by National Park Rangers brought to our attention, one from Victoria and one from Queensland, but both with the same intent - where's your permit to take photographs in OUR national park? Seems if you want to sell the photographs you have to pay the National Parks people for the privilege of capturing scenic views on film. We thought National Parks were for all Australians and owned by "the people".
Other Laeliinae. Colin Jennings shows us some of the more recent AOC Awards for the smaller and diverse section of the Laeliinae group. Fifteen photographs accompany the article - a must read for all judges.
Other Things: There are details of the coming shows around Australia, workshops, new products, our usual departments such as Cultural Notes, Computer Corner and more.
