Recent Australian Orchid Council Inc. Activities AOC President, John Harris, reports on the Annual General Meeting and the Board of Management meetings held in Adelaide in October - the first such meetings under the new organisational structure.

AOC Orchids of the Year 1997 These awards for Orchid Species of the Year, Orchid Hybrid of the Year and the Award of Distinction of the Year 1997 are announced in this edition. The results and photos are available on this web site from the main index page.

The Truly Miscellaneous AOC Registrar General leads us through some of the very recent AOC Awards with some unusual blooms.

The Cymbidium Page - What's in a Name? Julian Coker, in his regular feature, muses over the problems of incorrect labels and some of the ways that misnomers occur.

Selected Species - Paph. charlesworthii Peter Taylor's regular feature this issue discusses the beautiful species Paph. charlesworthii. There is a great photo with numerous flowers.

Ten Tips to Better Orchid Photographs David Banks shares his vast knowledge on orchid photography. David is one of the top orchid photographers in Australia. Who better to help with tips?

CD Review - RHS Orchids 98 Colin Hamilton reviews this new edition of the now famous CD-ROM, which contains all orchid hybrid registrations up to April 1998. The 1998 version is a major advance over the previous versions, and in particular, includes sample award data from the Australian Orchid Council plus 200 award photos, All Japan Orchid Society and the Orchid Society of SE Asia. And the price has come down again!

Ascocentrum ampullaceum var. album David Banks reports on this unusual species and illustrates his article with the usual high quality photograph shown full page.

World Orchid Conference Vancouver, April 1999 Colin Hamilton and Eleanor Holwerda provide an interesting insight into the forthcoming WOC. Time is running out and the time has come to make that decision.

Neogyne gardneriana - a rare orchid K.C. Pradhan tells of the interesting background to this rare species - the only species of this genus. It is found in northern India and other SE Asian locations, but not very often. Nice photograph of the pendulous, bell-like flowers by the author.

Meet the New American Orchid Society President - Milton Carpenter The new President took the Chair in late October and we are pleased to be able to introduce Milton to our readers. Colin Hamilton visited the Carpenters during a recent visit to the United States.

Our Web Site Gains Another Award Orchids Australia's Web site has received another award (the fourth) this time for being a Key Resource in the orchids field. The award comes from the Links 2 Go and their jazzy, colourful logo now adorns our main index page. The award is for the resources within and links to other resources, the quality of the site and the organisation of the information. We were the first Australian orchid site on the WWW and now a multi-award winner. The site was born in August 1995. It is currently undergoing a make-over, and more resources have been added.

Masdevallia decumana - Clive Halls This is the first part of a planned series. Clive details this unusual species and some of its progeny. Nice photos to illustrate the article as well, all taken by the author.

6th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference, Townsville Ted Boon reports of this major event held in North Queensland in mid September. The authors words are accompanied by a photo pictorial which features many of the medal winning orchids - the work of noted Brisbane photographer, Gary Yong Gee.

Dendrobium Mousmee Dave English and John Rees relate the history of this aged, little known orchid which we are told has produced no progeny.

Oberonia setigera Jim Cootes may have gone overseas, but he has deposited a series of articles on unusual species with us, and here is the first of them. As usual Jim delves into the background and culture of the species. Nice photo too.

Plus… All the regular features of what's winning at Shows around the country, Cultural Notes for various parts of Australia, and our list of upcoming International orchid events through to 2002. There is also a surprise for some lucky Australian subscriber - Orchids Australia free for one year, provided it is claimed in 14 days.
