THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:
FRONT COVER: Dendrobium sanderae var. major - A magnificent photo by David Banks introduces a feature article by Jim Cootes "Dendrobium Section Formosae from the Philippines". Jim gives us an insight into the section and the differences between not only species but some varieties.
Selected Species - Restrepia guttulata. Peter Taylor's regular feature is always a wealth of information, and this month is no exception. The accompanying photograph is a full page blow up of this beautiful and unusual orchid, again the work of David Banks.
The Cymbidium Page. Julian Coker writes on some aspects of Cymbidium terminology and helps to clear up some misuses.
Slug-zilla. Jim Shaughnessy supplied this story with a photograph of a slug captured in a friend's orchid house. The culprit is Limax maximus and measured 145mm (almost 6") See it life size!
Following in Schlechter's Footsteps. A group of well known orchidists and botanists were invited by the Papua New Guinea government to undertake a expedition to the Torrellei Ranges to re-collect specimens of PNG orchids, and, hopefully find some new ones. The expedition was multi-purpose but the major reason was to replace Schlechter's specimens collected in 1802 and 1809 which were destroyed in Berlin during WWII. The team had just left the Sepik River area two days before the disasterous Tsunami hit.
Book Review: Orchid Names and their Meanings. Colin Hamilton reviews Hubert Mayr's massive volume recently translated into English. It is quite a piece of work, and the information contained therein makes for fascinating reading. 550 pages.
Amesiella philippensis. David Banks writes on this magnificent species, formerly Angraecum philippense, and shows us two different forms of the flower.
R.D. Fitzgerald Trophy. Ruth Rudkin is Secretary of the Ira Butler Trophy Committee. The group has seen fit to introduce a further trophy for outstanding contribution to the world of orchids. Ruth details all the conditions which apply.
The Ira Butler and Bill Murdoch Trophies for 1998. Ruth Rudkin, as Secretary of the Trophy Committee, advises the closing date for nominations for this year - just in time for the Spring Show season.
The Orchids of Flinders Island. Flinders Island is located between Victoria and Tasmania in the Bass Strait. A group of orchid enthusiasts chartered two aircraft from Melbourne to spend a 4-day weekend exploring the island and its orchids. Story by Bruce Harris, and some great photos, not just the orchids either!
Madagascar. This is one of the last surviving orchid wilderness areas. Murry Shergold takes us for a visual and verbal tour of this olde world island. Orchids abound Lemurs bound, and travellers hang on to outrigger canoes. Photos by Murray Shergold.
6th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference - Orchid Stamps. August sees a joint issue of orchid stamps by Australia and Singapore to commemorate this triennial event. We are grateful to Australia Post for supplying a copy of the Miniature Sheet of four stamps ahead of time to illustrate them in OA just for you. Needless to say they were under tight security!
International Orchid Show Okayama, Japan. Noted Brisbane photographer, Gary Yong Gee, has recorded his views in words and photographs. Gary and others staged a display in Okayama by invitation.
Other Things: There are details of the coming spring shows around Australia, workshops, our usual departments such as Cultural Notes, and more.
