Viruses of Native Orchids
Further research results are reported from a project partially funded by the Australian Orchid Foundation, and carried out by Dr. Don Gowanlock, of the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis, University of Queensland. The study included native orchids growing in their natural habitat. A new type of virus group is reported.

The Cymbidium Page - Oddities
Julian Coker, in his regular feature, discusses Cymbidium oddities this month. There are a number of oddities from the peloric form of the flowers to some unusual occurrences with both plants and inflorescences.

Selected Species - Miltioniopsis phalaenopsis
Peter Taylor's regular feature this issue discusses the beautiful Miltoniopsis and there is a great photo by David Banks.

Dockrillia Hybrid Rejected by the RHS.
The International Orchid Registrar has rejected use of the genus name Dockrillia in a recent hybrid registration application. David Banks reports on this case and puts his point of view. On the same page the International Orchid Registrar responds. It seems there is a stalemate.

Book Review - The Pictorial Encyclopaedia of Oncidium by H. Zelenko et al.
Colin Hamilton reviews this magnificent publication which is the result of 13 years of painstaking artistry, illustrating some 759 single flowers and 71 complete plants. The book is not strictly limited to Oncidium, with some near relatives included also. This is more than an orchid book, it is a work of art.

Stanhopea nigro-violacea 'Helen' CC/OSCOV
Julian Coker gives a short lesson on growing this unusual orchid which he has illustrated with a plant sporting 36 flowers and 44 buds!

World Orchid Conference Vancouver, April 1999
Colin Hamilton reports on a recent advance trip to Vancouver to see what might be in store for those attending the 1999 Conference. Early bird registrations close on 31st July. There is also some clarification of the registration categories.

Ira Butler and Bill Murdock Trophies for 1998
Ruth Rudkin advises of the conditions and closing date for these prestigious awards for this year.

Victorian Orchid Club - Orchids of the Year
The VOC recently selected their Orchids of the Year (1997) and these are all pictured. Some of these are the VOC nominations for the AOC Orchids of the Year to be selected and announced at the Annual General Meeting in October.

Oncidium Margaret Reid 'Lemon' AD/NSW
When Gordon Giles benched this plant at the April meeting of the Orchid Society of New South Wales Ltd., the eyes popped! It is an albino form, and a truly magnificent colour at that. David Banks gives us the run down as well as supplying another superb photograph.

Japan Orchid Grand Prix
Kevin Butler takes us on a trip around this annual show, surely one of the top orchid shows of the world. There aren't too many orchid shows with a Mercedes car and $25,000 cash for the Grand Champion Orchid! The Champion was Phalaenopsis Cygnus 'Renaissance' owned by Kokubunji Orchids. Kevin is another skilled photographer and his in depth report is lavishly illustrated.

Awards from the Brisbane Conference
Registrar General of Judges, Colin Jennings, shows us some of the awarded plants coming out of the 14th Australian Orchid Conference and Show held in Brisbane in September 1997. As usual it takes time for these awards to be processed and available for publication.

Isabelia virginalis
Jean Deane describes this unusual pendant species.

Official Tour to the World Orchid Conference, Vancouver
Don Gallagher details an Alaskan Cruise forming part of the package for the official AOC Tour group to the Conference next April. Passengers can be assured of some stunning sights, as the illustrations show.
