CONTENTS

FRONT COVER:
Phragmipedium besseae – Two line-bred clones of this vividly coloured species, photographed by David Banks, introduces David's account of a five week whirlwind tour of the USA.

Selected Species – Coryanthes maculata. Peter Taylor's regular feature is always a wealth of information, and this month is no exception. Peter delves into the history of this fascinating species providing some very interesting reading.

The Cymbidium Page. Julian Coker provides an account of the procedures, costs and benefits of Plant Breeders Right legislation.

14th Australian Orchid Conference. We have incorporated a lift out programme for the September Conference in Brisbane. There is an event programme, a detailed lecture programme and biographical notes on each of the speakers.

The Genus Calanthe. Colin Jennings has responded to requests for information on the culture of this genus. The Calanthes, especially the Japanese species, are flavour of the month in the USA in particular, and some of the oldies but goodies are also making a come-back.

A New Paph. From Vietnam – Paph. helene. Roger Kramer provides details on the discovery of this new species and compares it with the very similar Paph. barbigerum. Detailed photos included.

The Christmas 'Bulbo.' – Bulbophyllum facetum. Jim Cootes provides us with an insight into this unusual species. Great photograph!

Orchid Photography. Alan Stephenson tells us all he knows about photographing orchids under a number of conditions, the equipment to use, and some very handy hints. Well illustrated, but when I say that I mean there are some good photos of what not to do and things to look out for. Alan has responded to a Letter to the Editor earlier this year requesting information.

Justin Tkatchenko – Curator of the PNG National Capital Botanic Gardens. Barbara Walker of Melbourne recently paid Justin a visit and tells of his life long trist with orchids and his redevelopment of the gardens in Port Moresby. Timely too as Justin has just been awarded the British Empire Medal for his services. He will be a speaker at the 14th Australian Orchid Conference.

Eungella – Land of the Clouds. Jim Cootes takes us inland from Mackay, Queensland, to visit the Eungella National Park, reknowned for its array of orchid species. The route crosses the Broken River, home of the duck-billed Platypus – and especially for our overseas readers we have a great photo of one of this unique mammals. This is Jim's first article for us.

Book Review – Growing Orchids Under Lights. Don Gallagher reviews this recent publication from the American Orchid Society. While we in Australia don't do much growing with lights, the publication abounds with things of interest, especially the photography by Charles Marden Fitch.

Show Dates – August to November. Going on vacation. We have the largest collection of orchid society show dates imaginable, covering all the major spring shows.
