THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:
Odontoglossum Culture - Philip Altmann of Warrnambool Orchids, gives the good oil on growing the Odontoglossum alliance. There are some magnificent orchid photographs (especially Oda. Beaumont) and an excellent selection of photographs offering cultural advice. If you are into this area of orchids this one is not to be missed.
Orchids of the 50 Peaks. Greg Steenbeeke writes his first article for Orchids Australia. Greg recounts an adventure in the southern part of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. This is a fascinating orchid travelogue with some great photos, including our cover photo this month - Sprianthes sinensis.
Fungal Diseases of Orchids. Helen Ogle writes of the findings of an investigation funded by the Australian Orchid Foundation. Helen writes in a very easy to read style and her articles are always well received (as are her lectures). The work is enhanced by 24 photographs illustrating the effects of various symptoms on assorted orchid genera.
This is our 50th edition! Founding Publications Director, Don Gallagher, provides an insight into the early days of this magazine and how things have changed.
14th Australian Orchid Conference. Les Vickers brings us up to date on this triennial event and the major orchid event in the Australian, which is scheduled for September, in Brisbane, Qld.
Selected Species - Oncidium macranthum. Regular contributor Peter Taylor looks at this beautiful species and its history and as usual there is a magnificent photo accompanying the article.
New Headquarters for the American Orchid Society. We report on the developments taking place with a new home for the AOS in Florida. The AOS is one of the largest, if not the largest, orchid society in the world currently with some 30,000 members.
CD Review:
The Darwin Multimedia CD : David Banks reviews this new publication Lightbinders, San Francisco. This is the collective work of Charles Darwin, the most productive and innovative biologist of his time. There are seven works including the Origin of the Species. The CD also includes a seven-minute video narrated by Sir David Attenborough. A very important publication as some of the printed volumes are out of print.
Liparis gibbosa. Jim Cootes regularly writes on species for us and this month he looks at this quaint species - again well illustrated.
The Cymbidium Page. Julian Coker's regular feature in this issue is on Cymbidium Pacesetters. Julian looks at some of the Cymbidiums that have changed the orchid world over the decades. Six good photographs accompany the article.
Darwin International Orchid Spectacular, 31 May/1 June. Advance information of the 7th Darwin Orchid Spectacular which is seen as a stepping stone to a further enhanced event in future years. To be staged by the Rotary Club of Darwin Sunrise.
