Trends in Modern Cattleya Breeding - by Ned Nash of the American Orchid Society. Part One of this two part feature covers the large exhibition cattleyas and the modern Laelia hybrids. This is sure to interest most orchid growers and updates the latest hybrids. Sixteen superb photographs accompany this article. Part 2 will be published in the December issue, covering other sections in the cattleya alliance.

Can You Successfully grow Phalaenopsis? - by Wal Murphy. This is an article based on a lecture given in Mackay earlier this year. Illustrations of some excellent phallies drawn mainly from the AOC Awards collection. Front Cover features a superb flowering of Phal. CarmelaÕs Wonder ÔForestdaleÕ AM/AOC-QOS, grown by phallie-master, Stuart Heyden.

Orchids of Romania - by Henrik Neirynck. Here is an insight into the unusual orchids of a distant land. Probably European readers will be familiar with some of them, but the majority of our readers should find this enlightening.

Leaf Tip Die Back in Orchids, Part 4 - Ian Shaw etal. We continue this series on research into the possible causes of Leaf Tip Die Back. The series concludes with the December issue.

Second Victorian Orchid Conference & Show - Julian Coker reports on this highly successful event held in August. This event has really taken off and is now truly international, having had an exhibit from the National Capital Botanic Gardens in Papua New Guinea.

Growing Orchids with Horse Power by Nic Van Den Bosch. Nic has long promoted the use of horse manure as an excellent medium for growing orchids (he grows mainly cymbidiums). Here is a short article accompanied by some pictorial poo-roof!

Registrar GeneralÕs Page - FCC Awards. Colin Jennings continues his series of articles on the AOC awards. For this one we had to dig deep in the award photo archive to find the first FCC/AOC - awarded to Blc. Sylvia Fry ÔWallaciaÕ. There have only been five FCCÕs granted. All are illustrated.

Selected Species - Dracula tubeana - A regular segment by Peter Taylor. The story is in PeterÕs inimitable style, full of interest and accompanied by a superb photo by David Titmuss.

THE CYMBIDIUM PAGE. Julian Coker. A regular feature in each issue is the Cymbidium Page. This monthÕs topic is ÔThe Mobile ElementsÕ in plant nutrition and performance. Three photos illustrate differences between good culture and poor.

Book Reviews - This month three new books are reviewed, two Australian and one from the USA.

THE MAUDIAE TYPE PAPHIOPEDILUMS. John Woolf. The influence of Paph. Maudiae is well documented, and recently the Maudiaeâs have enjoyed a comeback with hybridizers using the different colour strains to achieve highly coloured progeny. Well illustrated with nine photographs.
