THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:
Masdevallia - Hairs and Stripes. Part 1 - Hairs - Dr. Louis Vogelpoel, South Africa
looks at the hairs on the Masdevallias. They are not quite what you would expect.
There is some excellent photography, not the least of which is a hair taken under
a microscope. Part 2 in April will look at the Stripes section.
Virus Disease of Orchids. Don Gowanlock of the University of Queensland, Brisbane,
has completed some projects on this tricky and, at times, controversial subject.
We asked Don to write an article in lay terms, with plenty of colour photos to illustrate
the various manifestations of Virus. (Reprints of this four page article with 18
photos, are available from the Australian Orchid Council, Box 145, Findon, SA 5023
at 50c each, minimum order of 10, post paid.)
Andree Millar - 1913 to 1995. A Valedictory by Ron Kerr with additional information
from other friends. The Queen of the PNG orchids is dead. We review the life of
this remarkable woman, and her work with the orchids she loved so dearly. She was
one of a kind and we may never see her like again.
New Virus Research funded by the Australian Orchid Foundation. A brief report on
the continuing research into this incidious disease. A new project for two years
has been approved.
Vale - Bill Smoothey. Another great stalwart of the Australian orchid scene, Bill
was one of those responsible for the birth of the Australian Orchid Council. Bill
died only one week before Andree Millar.

winners of the Grand Champion Australian Native Orchid Hybrid and Grand Champion
Native Orchid Species of the Year.

the Orchids of Asia by Mark Issac-Williams. This is the 1995 CD-ROM version of Mark's

for Everyone.

rest of the page Jill Ferguson reports on her research on this pathogen of many horticultural crops including orchids and tropical fruits, and finds that it can be transmitted
from fruit trees to orchids.

to come to an open day at the bog and factory.
A Man, his Orchids and his Home. Colin Hamilton writes of his visit to Noumea, New
Caledonia, and in particular the home of Gabriel Cayrol, then President of la Societe
Neo Caledonienne d'Orchidophilie. Gabriel is an architect and as he says: "I designed my house around my orchids." Come and look - you will be amazed.
