CONTENTS

THIS MONTH'S FEATURE STORIES:

Masdevallia - Hairs and Stripes. Part 1 - Hairs - Dr. Louis Vogelpoel, South Africa looks at the hairs on the Masdevallias. They are not quite what you would expect. There is some excellent photography, not the least of which is a hair taken under a microscope. Part 2 in April will look at the Stripes section.

Virus Disease of Orchids. Don Gowanlock of the University of Queensland, Brisbane, has completed some projects on this tricky and, at times, controversial subject. We asked Don to write an article in lay terms, with plenty of colour photos to illustrate the various manifestations of Virus. (Reprints of this four page article with 18 photos, are available from the Australian Orchid Council, Box 145, Findon, SA 5023 at 50c each, minimum order of 10, post paid.)

Andree Millar - 1913 to 1995. A Valedictory by Ron Kerr with additional information from other friends. The Queen of the PNG orchids is dead. We review the life of this remarkable woman, and her work with the orchids she loved so dearly. She was one of a kind and we may never see her like again.

New Virus Research funded by the Australian Orchid Foundation. A brief report on the continuing research into this incidious disease. A new project for two years has been approved.

Vale - Bill Smoothey. Another great stalwart of the Australian orchid scene, Bill was one of those responsible for the birth of the Australian Orchid Council. Bill died only one week before Andree Millar.

The Gold Ira Butler Trophy and the Bill Murdoch Trophy for 1995. We announce the winners of the Grand Champion Australian Native Orchid Hybrid and Grand Champion Native Orchid Species of the Year.

A Book Review - CD-ROM! Colin Hamilton and Gary Knight review An Introduction to the Orchids of Asia by Mark Issac-Williams. This is the 1995 CD-ROM version of Mark's book published in 1988, with some updating and computer technology applied.

Catasetum pileatum is Peter Taylor's Selected Species for the Month. As usual a superb colour photograph accompanies the article.

3rd Australasian Native Orchid Conference 1996. We provide some advance information on this event scheduled to be held in Adelaide between 25th and 30th September 1996.

'Orchids for Everyone', H.G. Alexander, and Bill. Brian Milligan has an interesting story associated with the acquisition of his copy of H.G. Alexander's book Orchids for Everyone.

First Australian Orchid Nursery Catalogue is on the InterNet. Colin Hamilton reveals that there are now three orchid sites on the InterNet, including the first Australian commercial nursery to put their catalogue up - Keith's Nursery, Townsville. There is also information on other interesting sites to visit.

Growing Dendrobium anceps. Coral Anderson writes about growing this unusual member of the Dendrobium family, with two fine photographs of her specimen plant.

The Study of Identification Methods of Colletotrichum coccodes and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and the Pathogenicity of these Fungi on Australian Orchids. On the rest of the page Jill Ferguson reports on her research on this pathogen of many horticultural crops including orchids and tropical fruits, and finds that it can be transmitted from fruit trees to orchids.

Bulbophyllum ambrosia. Jim Cootes is back after a short break with a story on this unusual and strangely beautiful orchid, and how he grows it.

So You Want to Import Some Orchids? Brian Maxwell explains the protocol for importing orchids into Australia, as well as some of the costs involved. Now you know what importers have to go through with CITES, Customs and Quarantine.

The Cymbidium Page - Flowering. Julian Coker's regular Cymbidium page this month looks at flowering, and some of the irregularities which occur.

Conferences & Shows. There are two segments, with a round up of advance information (up to 1998) on International events, and some Australian conferences and shows for 1996.

Fancy a Visit to a Moss Bog? Peter Binny of Austmoss, in Tasmania, invites readers to come to an open day at the bog and factory.

A Man, his Orchids and his Home. Colin Hamilton writes of his visit to Noumea, New Caledonia, and in particular the home of Gabriel Cayrol, then President of la Societe Neo Caledonienne d'Orchidophilie. Gabriel is an architect and as he says: "I designed my house around my orchids." Come and look - you will be amazed.

My Tryst with Dendrobium cuthbertsonii. Phil Spence has written of these courious miniature orchids which insist on flowering upside down. They hail from Papua New Guinea and can be found in a rainbow of colour variations and combinations. He also describes his methods of growing them successfully. Lots of photographs of some very striking colour forms.
