The genus Dendrochilum – Part 2. David
Banks and Jim Cootes continue their essay on this fascinating genus of
mostly miniature but spectacular orchid blooms, titled ‘A Guide to the
Species in Cultivation’. The

DuPont, USA charged over Benlate fiasco.
The USA Environmental Protection Agency has issued a
civil administrative complaint
against E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. for alleged violations of the
Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
The EPA alleges that DuPont violated FIFRA by selling and
distributing three Benlate (benomyl) fungicide products that differ
chemically from the original formula the company had registered.
Dracula lives on – David P. Banks
Bela Lugosi is dead but Dracula lives on.
David discusses this fascinating orchid genus and in particular Dracula

Fred Jones
The Orchid Society of New South Wales has honoured
the work of two of their stalwarts, Graeme Banks and Fred Jones, with Life
Membership for their dedication to the advancement of orchids and orchid
growing.

In Memorium – Bill Carter
Colin Hamilton writes that Bill Carter, one of the
co-founders of the USA nursery, Carter & Holmes, passed away on 15th
June. Bill was a partner in
the company with his cousin Owen Holmes.
Bill is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Carter.
15th World Orchid Conference, Rio de
Janeiro, 1996
Don Gallagher has provided detailed information about
the next World Orchid Conference to be held in Rio de Janeiro in September
1996. The Australian Orchid
Council is arranging a group tour to Brazil for the Conference & Show.
Ghosts, Goblins and Dragons – Roger Kramer
In this issue, Roger provides Part 2 of a series on
this unusual and fascinating genus of orchids which has the habit of
flowering through the bottom of it’s container.
Some of these are sweetly perfumed, while others are as foul as
rotting meat. This article is

The annual Santa Barbara Orchid Show is one of the
biggest on the west coast of the USA and this year celebrated its 50th
Anniversary. Clive Halls from
Mt. Beenak Orchids in Victoria was there and provides us with narrative
text of his view of the event and photographs of some of the winning
orchids.
South Cajas and the Oriente – an Orchid Haven
Ray Thompson has had a love affair with Ecuador for
some time and he has been on many orchid treks, seeking new orchid
species. This month Ray takes
us into the area known as the Oriente, providing 25 photographs of the
orchids and the habitat in which they are found.
