ORCHIDS AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES 20th ANNIVERSARY OF PUBLICATION'

This issue of Orchids Australia is the first for our twentieth year of publication. In 1989, Don Gallagher and a small team of helpers in South Australia presented the first issue of Orchids Australia as the official publication of the Australian Orchid Council. At that time we had an associate in each of the states who was responsible for providing newsworthy material from their state’s clubs. . . . [more here]

19th World Orchid Conference Miami
Miami Beach, Florida, USA - January 23 - 27, 2008
Colin Jennings

MY wife and I were not initially going to attend the Miami Conference; however after the Conference in Dijon, our son convinced us that we should attend and at the same time visit him. How could we resist the offer!

The flight across the Pacific is a long one and this was no exception - the baggage handlers ran a container of luggage into the electrical wiring that controls the cargo hold door, so this required what was at first to be a short delay. Four hours later we were once again allowed to board the plane - having already been on board awaiting clearance to taxi to the runway.

Los Angeles - four hours late. You can imagine the confusion with so many passengers having missed their connecting flights to other ports in the USA. Not Happy!! Customs clearance took all of two hours from entry to the terminal to us having our luggage transferred to our flight to Miami. Fortunately we had our baggage checked through otherwise it would have been at least another hour - there were so many transfers awaiting rescheduled flights. We have travelled a lot and learnt from past experience to not schedule connecting flights too close together. We were right once again! We had allowed almost eight hours altogether. It turned out to be just about right. . . .[more]

BE WATER WISE'

Australia is in the grip of arguably the worst drought in 100 years.  Water restrictions abound across much of the country.  We have put together some hints for orchid growers to save water and still enjoy growing our favourite plants . . .

FOUNDATION OF THE AOC - 1960

The Australian Orchid Council was founded in 1960. Many people were involved in the foundation period leading up to the ultimate formation in September of that year. Unfortunately few published records exist. It is therefore worthy of reproducing the following short extract from the memoirs of the late Frank Slattery O.A.M., F.A.O.C., originally published in 1995. They record his perspective of the early days of the Council. . . . [more]

What is Australian Orchid Council Inc.?

The Australian Orchid Council Inc. of today is a far cry from that founded in 1960. After a number of years of turmoil, a new Constitution was adopted in 1997. Perhaps the most significant changes here were: the State representation at Council being handed to a STRO (State or Territory Representative Organization) with the former State member bodies being termed "Foundation Members" and having equal voting with other clubs in their home state; the introduction of Personal Membership as part of a subscription to Orchids Australia; and the separation of the regional Judging Panels from their former ‘State’ managerial status. Each State now has a number of panels which elect their Deputy Registrar of Judges, who are directly responsible to the AOC Registrar General. . . . [more]

A.O.C. Logo - the Legend

The AOC logo appears frequently throughout this website. It was designed by Gerald McCraith, one of AOC’s founding fathers, in 1967. The following, prepared by Gerald at the time, describes his concept and the symbolism . . [more]

Orchid Judging System

The Australian Orchid Council Inc., formed in 1960, coordinates and administers a national judging system of orchids in this country. The judging system is managed by the Registrar General of Judging, through a Deputy Registrar in each state or territory. The Deputy Registrar, in turn, coordinates the panel or panels of nationally accredited judges within his/her state. The panels are located throughout each state. Queensland and New South Wales have a large number of orchid societies/clubs, and growers, hence have a greater number of judges and judging panels. . . . [more]
